George Akiyama

Chief Information Officer

George Akiyama was appointed as the Chief Information Officer, for the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) by Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. In this position, he leads and provides oversight for the full range of Information Technology functions throughout Caltrans. Prior to working at Caltrans, Mr. Akiyama started his State career in 1995 and has held various positions including Application development Manager, Enterprise Architect, IT Project Manager, Strategic Planning Manager and Chief Information Officer of the Financial Information System for California (FI$Cal) Project.

Mr. Akiyama holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and a master of Business Administration from California State University, Sacramento.

Mike Nguyen

Division Chief
Infrastructure Management

Mike Nguyen, previously director of the CalPERS Data Center, oversees the IT Infrastructure Division at Caltrans and is responsible IT policies, standards, processes and procedures governing the design, development, implementation, maintenance and operations of Caltrans IT infrastructure, and critical IT services that support Caltrans day-to-day business operations.

Over the past 20 years, Mike Nguyen was CIO of the Department of Health Care Services (2008-10), and held managerial positions with California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, the Department of General Services and the Financial Information System for California (FI$Cal).
